Meet Tim Durant


Why did you choose to become a financial adviser?

I have always enjoyed helping friends and family with financial matters. When I decided to change career and leave the Royal Air Force it seemed like the perfect choice. I completed my Diploma for Financial Advisers and started working as a Financial Adviser in 2013.

What’s the best part of your job and why?

I love being able to talk to clients and explain the benefits to them of making the right financial choices. So many people are afraid of the unknown and their perception of financial planning is often that. Helping them overcome this perception is so rewarding.

What’s the most challenging part of your job and why?

Convincing client’s that they should be proactive with all aspects of their finances. Because so many people aren't comfortable with money they often take the easy option and do nothing to protect themselves or to grow their investments, they are afraid of making the wrong choices.  

What is it you do that you think is most beneficial in helping clients meet their financial needs?

I help them to understand what they need and then assist in their planning to ensure they have the best possibility of achieving it.

How do you spend your spare time i.e. hobbies, interests, charitable work

I am a keen runner and also enjoy international travel. I have been fortunate enough to combine these passions by running six marathons in six different countries, as well as several other races in other locations around the world. I am running a seventh marathon later this year.

What’s your biggest achievement outside of work?

Having been involved with the British Limbless Ex-Servicemen's Association (BLESMA) annual rehabilitation event in Solden, Austria for the past eight years I became a qualified Skibike instructor in 2014. Since then I have been able to teach students to Ski which, although very challenging, is immensely rewarding.

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received (financial or otherwise)?

There is no such thing as a stupid question, if you don't know the answer then ask someone who does.

What was the best customer outcome you delivered in the last 12 months?

Being able to secure a mortgage for a client who had just separated from their partner. With careful planning and negotiation they were able to sell the family home and move into a smaller home in the same area. This allowed them to continue in the same job and for their child to continue at the same school.
