Meet Chris Hamilton

DipPFS, CertCII (MP)

Why did you choose to become a financial adviser?

Having worked in Investment Banking for 20 years I wanted a change in career and felt that financial advising was a natural fit for me both due to my knowledge, and desire to deal on a more personal basis with people.

What’s the best part of your job and why?

Helping people.  It is a very rewarding feeling when clients are genuinely appreciative because I have helped achieve their goals and given them peace of mind.

What’s the most challenging part of your job and why?

Changing people’s perceptions of what I do and the benefits I can bring. Some people don't appreciate the many ways in which I could help, and have preconceived ideas of our industry and the products available. However if a potential client is open minded enough then I am always able to demonstrate the value of receiving advice.

What is it you do that you think is most beneficial in helping clients meet their financial needs?

It’s important to understand the client properly, both their current financial and personal circumstances and their goals. It is also important to make clients think about the future, as often this has not been given a lot of thought.  When plans are in place they should be reviewed regularly to adapt to changes in their lives.

How do you spend your spare time i.e. hobbies, interests, charitable work?

In my spare time I like to play golf, take my dog for runs through the woods and play the saxophone.

What’s your biggest achievement outside of work?

Apart from my children of course, my biggest achievement is completing an Olympic distance Triathlon in Windsor a few years ago.....and not finishing last!

What’s the best piece of advice you ever received (financial or otherwise)?

Live for today but plan for tomorrow.  Many people I meet can do one or the other but often not both.  Life is short so enjoy it when you can but plan ahead too.  Although it’s true that "I could be dead tomorrow" probably won’t be!

What was the best customer outcome you delivered in the last 12 months?

While advising a new client regarding her pension and investments I took the time to check whether she had been claiming higher rate tax relief on her pension contributions. She said that she never had and following a call to the local tax office she is able to claim for the last 4 years giving her a tax rebate of over £12,000.
