Risk assessment

The next stage in the process is to assess the client’s attitude to investment risk.

To help you determine the level of risk appropriate for your client's investment goals and timescales, we offer separate risk profile questionnaires for both investment and retirement planning.

Our questionnaires have been developed in conjunction with Towers Watson, one of the world’s leading investment consultancies.

Once you have completed a risk profile questionnaire with your client, you can input their answers into our risk profiler tool, available through our platform or via our free mobile app (please click on the tab at the top of this section to find out more).

The tool translates an individual’s views on investment risk into a single number – a ‘client risk score’, ranging from 1 to 10. Click on ‘further information’ on the right hand side to find out how the Old Mutual Wealth Risk Profiler works.

An individual’s risk score is not meant to be treated as a definitive and final risk rating. Its purpose is to provide a starting point for a more in-depth discussion with the client about their attitude to risk and their willingness and capacity to accept possible loss.

An individual client’s attitude to risk may vary depending on their financial goals and the timescale of the investment concerned. A liability-driven objective, such as school fees, may require more certainty about potential returns. Please read the next section about discussing risk with your client.

To make the risk profiling process more efficient for you and your clients, our app allows you to complete the relevant risk questionnaire, get the risk score and then discuss with your client what their risk score means, all in one go, during a single meeting. The tool shows the implied volatility and potential annual returns for Old Mutual Wealth's risk levels 1 to 10, helping to explain what a risk rating means and discuss its implications with your client.

Appetite for riskThe Old Mutual Wealth Risk Discussion mobile app is available for free from iTunes and Google Play.

The iPad version provides an enhanced user experience compared to the iPhone and Android versions. Thanks to the larger screen size of the iPad the risk discussion feature of the app now enables you to compare against two other risk levels, rather than the one comparison risk level on the iPhone version. The iPad app is intuitive to use, and we’ve given you more options when it comes to saving and sharing the output PDF. We’ve also included a number of useful tips within the app to help you make best use of it.

Following your client meeting, you can email back to your office a PDF, including details of the discussion and the final agreed risk score for use with Old Mutual Wealth’s online investment tools.
